NotD is at its core a game of decisions; the first decision is choosing a character class. As a new player only 3 classes will be available to you. These are the Rifleman, Assault and Medic. As you progress and level up additional classes will become available to use, based on XP and Rating. The unlocked classes are not necessarily better than the starter classes, however, their roles are more specialized or playing the character is more difficult. There are currently fourteen available classes with no plans to add more. Each class has two distinct skill trees that offer varied roles. For example, a "Field Aid Medic" is the only class that can heal others, and restore injuries, while a "Nano Tech Medic" is the opposite: its role is to stun and kill groups of enemies.

Campaign Character Discrepancies[]

Experience and Credit Reduction[]

If there are more than 2 players playing the same class type in any gamemode other than Recruit Mode, the entire team's Player Experience and Credit gain will be cut by 40% in that game. The Rifleman and Medic classes are not affected by this (choosing more than 2 of these will not cause the reduction to occur).

Randomization[]

Players can select to choose a Random Class in place of choosing a specific one. Doing so will reward them 10 additional magazines for being a risk taker. However, if the player leaves the game before death, they will lose 5 Karma as a punishment for not playing the class that was randomized and therefore bypassing the whole point of being a risk taker. Players under 10,000 Experience can only randomize classes they have unlocked, and classes for that campaign.

Players with at least 10,000 experience and 1700 rating can, in theory, play as any class from any campaign through randomization. Once hitting this threshold all classes are available in the randomization chance. This includes powerful combinations such as the Commando in the Apollo Security Team and the Forward Observer in Easy Company.
