Essentially, a cloaked version of the standard Gargoyle, the Wraith is a unique strain of Gargoyle that have evolved, or rather, mutated, into developing special light bending pigmentation in their skin cells. This allows them to quickly produce patterns and displays across their body that renders them nearly invisible to the human eye. Thermal Sights, Perception and the Commando's Heightened Senses will allow the user to see through their ruse. Flares cast such an illuminating glow that it overloads the creatures camouflage mechanisms, allowing Marines to see it.
Various skills and attacks can still hit the beasts even when unseen. The Marksman's Monofilament Cartridge and the Rifleman's Grenades are just a few examples. Unfortunately, the creatures are resistant to the ultrasonic pulse emitted by Sonic Traps.
Overall Wraiths are rarely seen. They will only appear in the Easy Company Campaign during Bio-Dome B and on Nightmare Mode, the Gargoyle wave at the end of chapter 1. They also appear in small numbers in both the Alpha Company Campaign and the Apollo Security Team Campaign.
